What size moving boxes should I use for different items?

Matching box size to item weight and fragility is the foundational principle of smart packing. Small boxes (1.5 cubic feet) should hold your heaviest items: books, canned goods, tools, hardware, files, and dense kitchen items like cast iron cookware. The rule of thumb — a full small box should not exceed 30–35 pounds — prevents boxes from failing under their own weight during the move.

Medium boxes (3 cubic feet) are the workhorse of any Sarasota move: toys, shoes, small appliances, pots and pans without handles, folded clothing, DVD and game collections, and everyday household items. Large boxes (4.5–6 cubic feet) should contain only lightweight, bulky items: pillows, comforters, blankets, stuffed animals, lampshades, sports balls, and lightweight clothing. Overfilling a large box with heavy items is the most common packing mistake and creates dangerous unstable loads.
